PREFACE.
This third of my five sales, ought, in accordance with the
preface to the Catalogue of the first sale, to have taken
place in the autumn of 1881. It has been postponed on
account of much occupation, private and professional, and
now occurs a twelve-month after its appointed time.
Exempted from haste and hurry, in consequence of this
delay, I have endeavored to compile an interesting, ac-
curate, and properly minute, but not too ample, Catalogue
of the Third Part of my Cabinet, a part not inferior in
value and importance to either of those which have pre-
ceded it on the path of dispersion. I have taken pains
that this Catalogue may gain the approval of critics, and
that purchasers may find nothing in it exaggerated or over-
described. The latter will undoubtedly be attracted by the
great rarity of a large number of the specimens, and the
excellent condition of nearly all; and I confidently expect
from their intelligence and judgment a renewal of the
interest testified on the two preceding occasions.
The interval following the present sale, may perhaps be
lengthened, like the one just passed, since an attempt will
be made to dispose of the entire Fourth Part of the Cabinet,
comprising ancient Coins exclusively, by private sale, in
mass, to some institution, educational or other; and that
IV.
may lead to protracted negotiation. In case of its failure,
the public sale will take place as announced; while, in the
event of a private sale, printed Catalogues of the Fourth
Part will nevertheless be supplied to those who may desire
the complete Catalogue of the Cabinet, which is ultimately
to be formed by combining the five parts.
May many a member of the numismatic brotherhood
obtain many a satisfactory acquisition from among the very
important, instructive, and artistic productions now to be
scattered, and enjoy, in his turn, the entertainment and
information which they have yielded to previous owners.

NUMISMATIC BOOKS ILLUSTRATING- THIS
PART OF THE CABINET.
This valuable collection of books , far surpassing in importance
any other of the kind , offered as yet at an auction in this
country, may occasion disappointment for the reason that
very nearly all of them are in the German language. But
so it has to be . In almost every mine of modern knowledge
the diligent and accurate German is the great accumulator
of material. The laborious bee of Germany, according to
one of her own poets,
“ Gathers, on every field, honey ; and knows not for whom."
Translations, it is trite, furnish, in many cases, a key
to unlock these treasures, but the path of Numismatics
is so peculiar, so untravelled except by the few elect,
that no other guide can sometimes here be obtained than
an actual knowledge of the language in question. More
particularly must this be the case when, as here, the subject is
that of German Numismatics and other branches of the
science akin thereto. Eckhel wrote his l< Doctrina Numo-
rum Veterum" in Latin ; Mionnel and many another
famous writer, French or English, have written in their re-
spective mother-tongues on the same theme; but Madai on
German Dollars can be read in German only. In general,
however, a very deep knowledge of it is not required for
numismatic investigations; while the engravings with which
most of the books are amply illustrated will prove a great
aid in the solution of difficult problems.
The German Sale- Catalogues, of which a list is appended to that
of the books , are worthy of notice , not merely because they
are models in their way, that of the Schulthess-Rechberg
collection , by the Erbsteins, easily taking the lead, but be-
cause many of them are priced, shoicing in divers instances
the source whence some of the best specimens in this cabinet
have been obtained, and affording, in several, an oppor-
tunity to compare the sums they have commanded, here and
abroad. The interest attaching to a coin or medal is much
enhanced also if it be known to have belonged to a famous
amateur like the one above-mentioned.
A few other Catalogues, such as the celebrated one of Welzlvon
Wellenheim, have been reserved to subsequent Parts of this
Sale, inasmuch as they are largely devoted to Ancient
Numismatics or American.

Note. — In the sales of Parts Four and Five, the same plan will
be followed, viz., after each of them will be offered such
fraction of the stock of priced Catalogues of preceding an-
nual parts as mag be consistent with the quantity remain-
ing on hand , excluding the fifty of each, which are reserved
to form a volume, as is explained in the preface to Part

quantity of Catalogues of that Part will be provided for
carrying out this plan.
